Pearl Guide
What are freshwater pearls?
Freshwater pearls grow in mussels in lakes and rivers. Each mussel can produce many pearls at once, and every pearl forms layer by layer from nacre — the same luminous substance that lines the inside of the shell. Thicker nacre means deeper, longer-lasting lustre.
Why every pearl is different
Because pearls are made by living creatures, no two are exactly alike. Slight variations in shape, size, and tone are the signature of a natural pearl — not flaws. Your piece will always be one of a kind.
How to choose
- Lustre — look for a bright, mirror-like glow. This matters more than perfect roundness.
- Shape — round pearls are classic; baroque and oval pearls feel modern and organic.
- Colour — white is timeless; pink and peach add warmth against the skin.
- Size — smaller pearls sit delicately for everyday; larger pearls make a statement.
Freshwater vs. other pearls
Saltwater pearls (such as Akoya) are typically rounder and pricier per pearl, but freshwater pearls offer wonderful lustre, a wider range of natural shapes and colours, and excellent value — which is why we chose them for Nualira.
Caring for your pearls
- Put pearls on last — after perfume, lotion, and hairspray.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Store separately in the pouch provided so they don't scratch.
- Avoid swimming, saunas, and harsh chemicals.
